Automating Personnel's Rotation Generation in the Healthcare Industry

Personnel scheduling plays a critical role in Healthcare Systems. Utilizing the acquired knowledge in the previous work on the Nurse Rostering Project, Daric collaborated with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) on the development of an optimization model for automating personnel rotation generation. Several categories of rules and policies based on the different union policies were considered in the development of the model; BCNU, HEU, and HSA rules and requirements were incorporated into a Constraint Programming model. Google TO-Tools which is an open source optimization library is used to find the optimal solutions. The optimization model was embedded into an automated pipeline on MS Azure as one of the products of the VCH’s People Analytics department.
